Energy Lake, Moss Creek, LBL

Centrally located on the eastern side of Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, Energy Lake, with its well-spaced campsites and quiet lake just off Barkley Lake, has a definite “get away from it all” feel. Popular with fisherman, it also has a swimming area, canoe rentals, and hiking trails. Moss Creek Day Use Area, just north of Energy Lake, offers a picnic area and swimming on the Kentucky Lake side of LBL. Location: From Paducah, travel east on Hwy 24, take exit 31 onto Hwy 453/Dover Rd. Head south on The Trace, as the highway is called within LBL, to Sugar Bay Rd, turn left. Then left on Ironton Rd to Energy Lake Rd. (270) 994-2270

The Home Place

Located in Land Between the Lakes, The Homeplace recreates mid-19th century rural life with 16 reconstructed log buildings complete with furnishings, livestock, heirloom crops, and historic interpreters who demonstrate farm skills. $4.00 admission for adults (as of 2012), donations are also accepted to help with the care of The Homeplace livestock. Location: From the intersection of The Trace and Hwy 68/80, travel south, The Homeplace is on the left just off The Trace.

Columbus-Belmont State Park

History buffs of all ages can learn about the area and the Civil War in the museum. The park has a snack bar, gift shop, miniature golf, picnic area and playground. Picnic pavilions are available for rent up to one year in advance. Located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, Columbus-Belmont State Park campground has 34 electric sites, 4 group overflow sites, showerhouse with laundry room. Year round camping but no water in winter. Location: Columbus-Belmont State Park, 350 Park Road, 42032 (270) 677-2327. Just west of Columbus, Kentucky on Hwy 58. From the intersection of Hwy 55 and Hwy 57/60 just outside Sikeston, Missouri, travel northeast on 57/60, then east on 60/62. Turn right onto 51/60/62 just south of Cairo, IL. At Wickliffe, KY, turn south on 51/62 to Arlington, head west on Hwy 80 to Hwy 123, turn left, head south to Columbus-Belmont State Park.
