Pierre Menard Home State Historic Site

Step back in time to see a glimpse of life in the early 1800's. Pierre Menard was a French-Canadian businessman, active in Illinois politics. No charge to tour, but donations are appreciated. Small museum in basement. Location: 4230 Kaskaskia Rd, Ellis Grove, IL. From Chester, travel north on Hwy 3, turn left on Shawneetown Trail, turn right on Kaskaskia Rd (618) 859-3031

Bell Smith Springs

If you're not put off by a bit of walking, Bell Smith Springs is a fabulous destination. Trails lead to multiple spots to swim, or just wade in the four streams that converge in this lovely valley. There are two primitive campgrounds. Location: From Harrisburg travel south past New Burnside, turn left on 8, turn right on C350E, continue on paved road to Bell Smith Springs.

Ferne Clyffe State Park

An absolute gem in southen Illinois Shawnee National Forest, Ferne Clyffe boasts a rich variety of plant life and impressive rock formations along 18 trails, some designated for equestrian use, within the park. Terrain ranges from easy to difficult. Picnic areas are available for daytime activities. Bank fishing is allowed in the 16 acre lake, and there are climbing/rappelling areas. Camping opportunities range from modern, to backpack, to equestrian. Deer Ridge campground has 56 sites, 37 of which are reservable and electric. Location: 1 mile south of Goreville, on Hwy 37.
